The Medical Electives East Africa Initiative gives international students planning their medical elective in East Africa the opportunity to undertake their medical elective with extensive options for multiple placements, participation in research and community health projects and the opportunity for optional home stays.
With the introduction of the Group Medical Elective Programs in 2011 in Kenya, the initiative now features, additionally, group tours and the opportunity for scholarships through The Laura Pushor Foundation which was established in memory of the program's founder. The placements retain their rich activity plan and have evolved into international collaborations with organizations across the region.
The Group Medical Elective Programs also feature a collaborative program with Masters for Community Health in Africa which provides you a platform to travel outside the confines of the clinical enviroment with clinicians, pharmacists and survey teams on mobile clinics as part of the elective program. Group tours are also highly subsidized through partnership with the Narok County Council and Kenya Wildlife Service.
Group Medical Electives Program 2012
Our internship programs are designed for students who are looking to achieve specific, measurable objectives through research or observation while attached to local community-based and civil society organizations in both the public and private sector. Students will be able to perform field studies, collect data and undertake vital research to aid the completion or attainment of academic and/or career objectives.
Although you will find structured programs that are listed here, programs are and can be structured to work around individual students' objectives. In this regard, by defining your objectives and expected outcomes, we are able to align a tailored program to suit your specific need. User-specified attachments are offered for a duration of six months.
Currently our non-user-specified programs are offered both by collaboration and by request. They are limited to placement with civil society and community-based organizations in the fields of:
- Rehabilitation (Substance Abuse) & General Counseling
- Peer Education
- Environmental Studies
- Language & Cultural Studies
- Democracy & Governance
- Journalism
- Community & Public Health in Africa
- International & Development Studies (specifically, in the fields of Agriculture, Economic Development and Community Empowerment)
Invariably, you will be attached to a non-governmental organization, government agency (parastatal) or religious organization which will provide access and exposure to a network of projects, field studies and even other organizations through which your objectives can be realized
